Three years ago, our union was embroiled in tense negotiations, followed by a controversial contract ratification. In response, the membership of Local 479 made their voices heard. In a historic turnout, you elected Sara, Paige, and me to lead with a clear mandate: "We want change." Members demanded more transparency, greater involvement in our governance, and better representation.
What followed was an unprecedented wave of member action. For example, we sent twice as many delegates to the District 7 Convention as ever before, marking a new era of participation and member-driven initiatives.
During my time in office, I’m especially proud of how we supported members through the 2023 strikes, the work shutdown, and the continuing industry lag in 2024. We implemented a Strike Relief Dues Incentive where the Local paid all 2024 stamp dues for all members. We also opened a food pantry, provided hardship grants, and launched the Member Assistance Program through the Entertainment Community Fund, while expanding supplemental insurance options through MetLife. These provided our members with a stronger safety net during a time when the majority of our members faced unprecedented financial hardships.
For the past three years, I’ve had the privilege of serving on the negotiations committee as the Set Teacher craft chair, working alongside many dedicated members of Local 479. Our collective efforts culminated in this year’s ASA negotiations, and I’m incredibly proud of how we came together—not only to advocate for better conditions and fair treatment for all our members but also to make our voices heard at the highest levels. Thanks to the commitment of Local 479’s rank-and-file members, we brought our needs directly to our international representatives at the bargaining table in an unprecedented way, setting a new standard for member-driven advocacy in our union.
It would be an honor to continue this journey with you as your Local 479 Secretary-Treasurer. Together, we’ve weathered difficult times and made meaningful progress, but there is still more to accomplish. I ask for your support so we can continue building a stronger, more united future for our union.
In solidarity,
Abby Hilton
